Computer Parts and Their Functions

We all know what a computer is. But do we know what are the basic computer parts and their functions?

Let us know more about some of the standard computer parts and their functions from the following article.

Different Components of the Computer and their Functions

Computers have helped humans complete their work faster, better, and with more precise results. There are several computer parts that include the ones we can see as well as the tiny microscopic ones fitted within the body.  We won’t go into the microscopic details, but let us take a quick look at the basic computer parts and their functions.

CPU – Central Processing Unit

The CPU is said to be the brain of the computer. The CPU consists of billions of tiny transistors that receive, calculate, and carries out basic processes and instructions. When the CPU is at work, it tends to generate heat. Thus, it has a fan present inside to cool it down and prevent overheating. It even powers the motherboard and other circuitry. It is placed on the motherboard. The CPU’s today are so fast that a single mouse-click will lead to processing of billions of cycles/second. Most computers have quad-core processors, in other words, four different processors in one component. You can even find six-core as well as eight-core processors in the market. However, they come with an expensive price-tag, so invest in them only if you need such superfast CPU’s.

Motherboard

Motherboard is like the heart of the computer it is the first component that is installed in a system unit. The motherboard contains all the circuitry related to the computer functions that helps keep the entire computer as one unit. It helps all components communicate with each other and even has ports that connect the eternal components connect with the internal ones. This includes the computer power plug, computer monitor plug, mouse, as well as the charger port in case of a laptop. There are many slots available in the motherboard for further extension of accessory ports. The motherboard even stores some low-level information after the system is turned off.

Memory

Next important computer part that forms the essence of a computer is the memory. The Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only Memory (ROM) as the cache forms the computer memory. The RAM is temporary, volatile memory. It is turned out whenever the computer or a program is turned on. Once the machine is shut down the RAM disappears. Similarly for cache that is also temporary memory where stuff remains for the CPU to interpret instantly. It also disappears when the computer is shut down. The RAM on the other hand is a permanent, non-volatile memory. It begins to execute immediately when the computer is turned on. So when you hit the power button on your computer, you will immediately see the company logo on your screen. During this time the ROM kicks in and begins system check. The hard drive is where your software is placed. It is connected to the motherboard with the help of circuitry of electrical wires.

Video & Sound Card

The graphics card helps you see the images on your computer and the sound card helps you hear from the internal speaker. There are a wide variety of graphics card and sound cards that helps those into high-end graphic designing sound play for better and faster processing of their projects.

Input and Output Ports

The input and output ports help the computer send and receive information to and fro. The input devices include the keypad, touchpad, mouse, webcam, etc. The output devices include the monitors, printers, and speakers. The removable media includes the flash drives, SD cards, etc.

These are some of the computer parts and their functions. Each computer component has important part to play with even one missing can stall the computer.

What is a Floppy Disk?

Kids who use pen drives and external hard discs or even store data on the cloud will never know the essence of a floppy disk. Once computers reached homes, educational institutes and offices, floppy disk became an essential instrument to store, transfer, as well as share data.

Those PPT presentations and Word document projects or the Excel sheets containing the company’s financial data would be easily transferred to a floppy disk. Soon, floppy disk lost their fan-following once CD’s, especially re writable CD’s came into picture. Soon, CD’s phased out to an extent after pen drives came into use.

Those who have never heard of them before, let us talk about what is a floppy disk in the following article.

A Floppy Disk

A floppy disk was not a floppy instrument as the name suggests. This square shaped diskette was a storage media file that could store electronic data. It had a protective casing that kept the disk (which is actually floppy/ flexible) protected. It was coated with iron oxide and stored data magnetically.

History

Floppy disk was first created by IBM in the year 1967. It was created as an alternative to the super-expensive external hard drives. The floppy disks were initially used only for installation of a new computer program on the computer. They were about 8 inches in diameter and were read-only. This meant user could not write on these disks. The capacity of these disks was only 80KB of data.

By the year 1978, a new disk of about 5.25 inches was introduced that could hold about 360KB of data. Later a 5.25 inch floppy could store 1.2 MB dat. Then, in 1987 the 3.5 inch HD (high density) floppy disk were released that could hold 1.44MB of data were released. Soon, these 3.5 inch floppy disk became the standard instrument for distributing software as well as storing data.

How to Use Floppy Disk?

The older versions of computer did not have CD-ROM drive or a USB drive, instead there were slots to read floppy disk. Just like a CD, one had to push the floppy into the floppy drive slot in the computer’s CPU.

Is Floppy Disk In Use Today?

There are quite a few computers today that still support a floppy disk. Computers built after the year 2000 no longer came with floppy disk drive. Soon, Microsoft Windows no longer supported floppy drives.

Floppy disks were vulnerable to dust, moisture as well as heat. It was not very sturdy and could easily get damaged. Although floppy disks had many drawbacks including less storage space, they helped many users carry and store their data. Today, they are a thing of the past, but still had great use during their peak days.

Microsoft Edge Supports Passwordless Sign-ins

Microsoft Edge will now allow users to securely sign-in to their accounts without the trouble to entering the passwords. Microsoft has introduced the Web Authentication feature in the Microsoft Edge browser. Thus, users can have a better and secure way of surfing the Internet without passwords.

The Web Authentication specification will help users log on with the help of Windows Hello hardware. This means the IR cameras and the fingerprint readers along with PINs or external FIDO2 security keys will be used to authenticate users.

Users can install the Windows Insider Preview build 17723 or higher or wait till it is available for the general public in Windows 10 version 1809. As this is one of the very latest technologies, many websites still need to catch up with it. Also, it is made with backwards compatibility with external FIDO U2F security devices. Thus, it will take time for all mainstream websites to adopt.

This method is being adopted by Microsoft as today we allow many websites to store our credit card numbers, addresses, as well as other sensitive personal information for regular use. However, all this is secured only using a password that is soon becoming an outdated security model.

In order to access the web securely and safely, passwords are given a pass as they are hard to memorize and at risk to phishing and cracking.

With Windows Hello, users can authenticate any account using their biometrics such as the face and fingerprint recognition. Or they can just use a PIN to sign in.

This new technology will definitely change the way we use the Internet and make it more secure and protected from hackers and identity thieves.

Our smartphones contain passwords to almost all out accounts that includes emails, social media apps, online shopping apps, and even mobile banking passwords, or credit card details. Thus, we always look for ways that helps us erase data permanently from our android phone. We will help you learn how to clean your android’s data permanently without giving any one a chance to hack into your phone’s memory.

Delete Data on Android Such That It Can Never Be Recovered

Factory reset is the most common way to clean your android’s data permanently. However, factory rest does not always clean up certain information such as multimedia files, emails, etc. from the internal memory. Do not fright as there is a way that helps you do factory reset without leaving any data in the internal memory.

Encrypt Data

Encryption is the best way to ensure data on your phone remains unrecoverable. Encryption takes all the data on your phone and jumbles it into garbage. The information when read will appear as a garbled mess with no meaning at all. So even if some data remains on the phone after a factory rest, it will remain as illegible garbage.

Before you start encryption of your phone, make sure your phone is charged and a charger is nearby. You can even keep the phone plugged into a charger as this does take a really long time. This is because at times encryption may take a couple of hours as per the amount of data on your phone.

The general steps to encrypt data include:

Settings> Security> Encrypt phone.

On Samsung Galaxy phones:

Settings> Lock screen & security> Protect encrypted data.

Those using Android 6.0 Marshmallow and above, keep in mind, the data is encrypted by default. So, you just need to go ahead and carry out factory reset of the phone.

Factory Reset of Android

Before you hit the reset button, make sure all your data is properly backed up. Either transfer all your contacts, images, videos, music files, folders, etc. to your new smartphone or upload them on a cloud such as Google Drive. Now, let’s see the general steps to factory reset an Android phone.

You need to go to:

Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. Then tap Reset phone or Reset device.

Samsung Galaxy users need to:

Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset and tap Reset Device.

Once it is done, your data will be completely wiped off the phone and data that can be recovered will be encrypted into garbled mess. Thus, making it safe for you to pass on the phone or sell it to someone else.

Overwrite with Data

In case you have too many secrets and need to be absolutely sure that nothing is ever recoverable, then you need to overwrite data on your internal storage. Just fill the phone with dummy data or record a long video using your phone camera as long as the internal memory is not completely out of space. Then, go ahead and carry out another factory data reset and your phone will no longer have any traces whatsoever of your old data.

You can even go in for third party apps available on the Play Store for cleaning your android’s data permanently.

Some of the options include:
  • Secure Erase with iShredder 6
  • Undeleter
  • TunesBro Android Eraser
  • Secure Wipe
This is all about how to clean your android’s data permanently. Try these methods and safely sell your old phones without worrying about the risk of data theft.
