Things You Need to Know Before Buying a Laptop

Thinking of buying a new laptop? Confused as there are plenty of models to choose from? Laptops today no longer need to be upgraded every couple of years, thus making it difficult to choose from the latest models when you decide to go in for a new one.

We shall discuss a few things you need to know before buying a laptop.

Quick Tips That Help You Buy a Laptop

There are plenty of choices to choose from when it comes to laptop. You can address the challenge by going through the following things you need to know before buying a laptop.

1.Size Matters

The first thing to consider is the size of your laptop. From 12.5 inches to 14 inches you need to select the size best suited as per your need. Smaller model is good for children for their school projects or if you travel a lot and need a laptop more for recreation or occasional work. Large screen sizes are perfect for professionals as well as college students. Your laptop should have a 1920 x 1080 screen. It would be even better if you go in for a 2-in-1 laptop that can be used as a laptop and a tablet. It is great for college and school students who can use the device as per their need. A touch screen laptop can be preferred if you are going in for Windows 10 OS.

2.Decide the Operating System (OS)

It is important to address this important problem as it will be the deciding factor as to your ease of use. Not all are well versed with Mac OS and if you suddenly decide to switch over, and then make sure you adapt quickly. Laptops come with 3 different OS namely, Windows, MacOS and Chrome OS.

Windows is one of the most versatile and widely used OS. It is simple to use and has many features comparable to MacOS and Chrome OS. The latest version Windows 10 has many improvements and comes with a powerful digital assistant called Cortana. Live tiles, use of stulus, touch screen compatibility, etc. are all now part of the latest Windows 10 version.

All MacBooks now come with Apple’s latest desktop OS called the macOS High Sierra. It is similar to Windows 10 in functionality but has a different interface. The virtual assistant in MacBooks is Siri. You can access your iPhone from the laptop and even unlock your laptop using Apple Watch using Siri.

Chromebooks such as Samsung Chromebook 3 are cheaper as compared to the Windows OS and MacOS. They have an interface similar to Windows and is mostly used for Chrome Browser. If you need to just check emails, chat, and spend time on social media, then Chromebooks are a good option. They are easy to carry and most preferred by parents of school children. It is hard for malware to infect and thus, useful for children. Look for Chromebooks with minimum 4GB Ram, 16 GB storage, 1920 x 1080 screen resolution (hard to find).

3.The Ergonomics Factor

Do not overlook the keyboard and touchpad feature before you buy a laptop. If you need to work a lot on your laptop then make it has a good tactile feature with a good vertical travel that is the distance travelled when the key is pressed (about 1 to 2mm). The keys should have enough space between them and should not crowd when you try and type. You should also consider a separate numerical pad on the keyboard. It will be very helpful if you use more of excel sheets. The touchpad should be able to respond immediately to your gestures and be able to pinch-and-zoom with ease.

4.Specification is the Final Game

You need to thoroughly think about the processor, hard drive, graphics chip, and RAM before you invest in a laptop. Yes, specifications may sound confusing to most but make sure you keep these points in mind.

Firstly, the CPU is what makes your laptop function. You can choose an Intel Core i5, which provides you with the best performance at the best price. Choose model numbers which end in U. Model numbers that end with Y have low power and those with HQ should be avoided. They tend to use more wattage and are found mostly in workstation or gaming systems.

Intel Core i3 are a notch below i5 performance wise. If you have budget issues, then i3 won’t disappoint you much. Intel Core i7 are a notch above i5. The models that have HQ or K in the end use higher wattage. They have four cores that allow better gaming and productivity. Those of Core i7 Y series have lower power performance. If you find a laptop with 8 in the model number, then it belongs to the latest8th Generation Core Series (Kaby Lake Refresh) available only in the U series models.

AMD processors are found in low-cost laptops and offer a good deal for your money. It is enough for those who are looking forward to surf the web, entertainment and well as productivity.
Moving over the RAM, you should go in for at least 4 GB RAM even if on a budget. And if you can loosen your purse strings a bit more then opt for 8 GB RAM.

Next thing to consider isthe battery life. Do not go in for laptops that cannot provide at least 7 hours of work whether at home or office. A laptop with 8+ hours of battery life is considered ideal. Make sure you read all the reviews related to the laptop battery life before making a decision.
Keep you budget in mind and choose your brand wisely. Brands do matter and go for companies with a good after-service support. Check out at least 4 to 5 laptops and then make the kill. And before you do that, do go through the things you need to now before buying a laptop discussed above.
