Types of Cloud Storage Explained

Information can easily be passed on around the world easily in today’s digital world. This has led to accumulation of lot of information in form of files, folders, photographs, videos, software, applications, etc. Information can either be for personal or professional use. Businesses need to store the personal information of their clients and customers. Storing data becomes a problem as well as people now need to access information on the go. Thus, cloud storage comes into picture wherein you can store applications, software, as well as databases online. One can access the cloud storage from any place or anytime from the web.

There are different types of cloud storage. Let us have a look at the different cloud storage types in the following article.

Classification of Types of Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is preferred by many businesses as it helps saving cost and makes it easy to manage data and share it with authorized people.

There are three types of cloud storage:

1.Private Cloud Storage

Private clouds are specifically designed for an individual or business as per their specific needs. These private clouds can be available in two formats, on-premise and externally hosted. Externally hosted private clouds are useful for individuals and small businesses. On-premise private cloud servers are usually opted by large organizations and businesses.

The data center architecture is owned by an individual company. Thus, it provides flexibility, automation, monitoring, provisioning, and scalability. The private cloud storage services are expensive as the businesses no longer need to maintain their own data center. The data center is covered with strong security and compliance specifications, thus, storing all data under the company’s firewall.

2.Public Cloud Storage

The public cloud storage requires less administrative controls and can be accessed by anyone who is authorized to view the database. The security system is different from that on a private cloud. Thus, it is not wise to put up sensitive data on the public cloud and rigidly integrate it with your business.
Pubic cloud storage is actually the Internet. Cloud service providers (CSP)tend to use resources and applications such as Software-as-a-service (SaaS) for the general public on the cloud. This includes Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Sun Cloud, Google AppEngine, Windows Azure Services Platform, etc.

The public cloud storage service is usually pay-per-usage model and the company just needs to pay according to the storage capacity used. Public cloud storage is not the right choice for all businesses. It has limited security, configuration and SLA specificity.

3.Hybrid Cloud Storage

As the name suggests, it is a combination of private and public storage. The features can be customized as per your need and integrate it with the applications. Sensitive data can be stored on the private cloud and data that needs to be accessed with different users can be placed on the public cloud.

During peak periods, the company can transfer certain applications or part of applications to be migrated on the Public Cloud. Also, during emergencies such as natural disasters, scheduled maintenance, blackouts, Internet outage etc. data can be migrated to a public cloud for a certain period of time.

These are the 3 basic types of cloud storages available for migrating your databases and applications on the cloud. Make sure you think twice before selecting any particular type of cloud storage for your business.
