What is Li-Fi and How Does it Work

You must have heard of Wi-Fi, the wireless way to access Internet.

You might be even using Wi-Fi to read this article.

Did you ever think just switching on a light bulb would help you get connected to the Internet? And not just Internet, lightning speed Internet! Well, we are talking about Li-Fi, the future of Internet technology. Let us learn more about what is Li-FI and how does it work.

What is Li-Fi?

Li-Fi is the latest technology that appears to an idea be right out of a sci-fi comic book.

Velmenni, is an Estonian startup that uses Li-Fi enabled lightbulb. This lightbulb helps in transmitting data at the speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). This makes it 100 times faster than the speed of Wi-Fi technology today.

Li-Fi is a visible light communications (VLC) technology. It can provide high-speed, bidirectional, and networked mobile communications. It is supposed to be more secure, with less device interference as well as high-speed connectivity.

Who Invented It?

Li-Fi was invented by Harald Hass during a TED Talk. He spoke about using lightbulbs as wireless routers. Many thought his idea would soon be forgotten like other ‘big ideas’. However, he came up with pureLiFI with the help of group of people who researched on this technology since 2008.

How Does it Work?

An overhead lamp is fitted with and LED. This LED is not any normal LED, but fitted with a signal-processing technology, that is, a semi-conductor device. It streams data that is embedded in its beam at ultra-high speeds. This speed is equal to photo-detector. With the help of a receiver dongle it converts tiny amplitude changes into electrical signal. This is then converted into data stream that is transmitted to computers or mobile device.

Can All LED Bulbs Be Used as Wireless Routers?

According to Haas, a tiny chip inserted into a LED lightbulb will help in transforming it into an ultrafast wireless router. A single LED bulb will serve as a source of illumination as well as wireless data transmission.

What is the Catch?

Although Li-Fi will provide a cleaner, greener and brighter option in the future, it has its downside. Li-Fi cannot pass through walls like Wi-Fi. Thus, you need to place LED lightbulbs with the microchip throughout the house to get seamless connectivity.

Li-Fi won’t work outdoors too, so getting public Li-Fi areas won’t be a possibility for now. And one has to keep the light on at all times to get connectivity. However, this may not be feasible environmentally as well as practically in homes and offices during daytime.

Li-Fi won’t be replacing your W-Fi router anytime soon. So, do not throw out your routers just yet. Li-Fi does promise a seamless experience, but will take time to be seamlessly integrated with day-to-day life.

    Unable to Resolve Error

Are you having trouble accessing or your router IP address?

Read on the following article and learn how to get connected if you are unable to resolve error.

    Can’t Access

If you need to access your router settings, you need to login using the IP address. Some routers may use as their default IP address. However, if you find a connection failure problem, it means your browser can’t access the router. Those who are unable to resolve error, they should follow the steps below to overcome their problem.

    • You need to ping on your computer. Those using Windows need to go to Start and type Run in the search menu and then type ‘CMD’.
    • A command window will open and you need to type ‘ping’.
    • See the result. If it shows ‘Reply from’, it means the network is OK. However, it shows ‘Request timed out’, it means that you cannot connect with your wireless router.

Reasons for Inability to Connect to the Wireless Router

There can be many reasons that lead to connection time out for your wireless router. These reasons can be:

    • The TCP/IP property is incorrectly configured on your computer
    • The TCP/IP settings may be correct, but if the router is connected to a Modem, the Modem’s setting can conflict with your router’s default setting. This conflict causes problems with gaining access to the router.
    • There may be a proxy setup in the browser.
    • There may be multiple network cards in computer that causes TCP/IP settings conflict.
    • The default IP address for your router is not and is something different.

    Troubleshooting Error

If you are having trouble entering the login screen, you need to open Control Panel and search for ‘network’. Click on ‘View Network Connections under Network and Sharing Center’.

Now, you need to right-click on the Ethernet adapter and select Properties. Scroll down the list and look for Internet Protocol Version 4.

Now click on Internet Protocol Version 4 and then click Properties. See if Obtain an IP address automatically is selected. In addition, check of Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected.

    Types of Computer Network

A computer network can be of many types based on size, geographical distance covered, capabilities as well as the type of services they provide.

There are many types of computer networks that are also known as ‘area’ networks. We shall cover some of the most common types of computer network that you may come across when using your home or small-scale computer network.

    Different Types of Computer Networks

There are many computer networks some of which are listed below:
    1. Campus Area Network (CAN)
    2. Content Networks
    3. Enterprise Private Network
    4. Home Area Network
    5. Local Area Network
    6. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
    7. Personal Area Network (PAN)
    8. Storage Area Network (SAN)
    9. Virtual Private Network (VPN)
    10. Wide Area Network (WAN)

These are some of the widely used types of computer network. Let us have a look at the most commonly used networks.

    Personal Area Network

PAN is a computer network that is organized around an individual person within a specific building. It could be within an office or a home. A PAN usually contains one or more computers, peripheral devices like a printer, video game console, telephone or other Internet-enabled personal devices.

When more than one individual uses the network within a single home, it is called as Home Area Network (HAN). A single wired connection is connected to a modem. One computer suffices the need to manage this computer network and can also be accessed from any other device such as a smartphone.

This PAN or HAN is a very useful and convenient computer network for many. It helps you do a lot many things without moving from your chair. It can help you:
    • Upload photos from a smartphone directly to your computer
    • It can help you send an image or document to the printer for print while you are sitting away from the printer, but within the network.
    • Stream movies on your Internet-enabled TV.

    Local Area Network

A LAN consists of a networking facility that is available in a small geographical area such as an office, school, airport, hospital or even home. It is very useful in sharing files, printers, games, etc.

LAN can be differentiated from other types of computer networks by:

    • The size of the LAN
    • The transmission technology used
    • Topology of the network

A LAN has restricted size and therefore makes it very simple to manage. It uses very inexpensive hardware technology such as Ethernet cables. The speed of transmission for a LAN ranges from 10Mbps to 100 Mbps.

There are different types of LAN such an Ethernet LAN. It is the most common type of local area network. There are different network topologies to broadcast LAN, such as:

    • Bus
    • Ring
    • Star
    • Extended Star
    • Hierarchical
    • Mesh

    Wide Area Network

The WAN is slightly more complex than LAN. It consists of computer that are connected together over large geographical distances. The network remotely connects them with a single large network and helps them communicate when far away from each other. The best example to explain WAN is the Internet. It allows different computers to be connected from different parts of the world.

The LAN is connected to WAN using routers. It transfers data and information quickly and securely. As WANs are too large, one administrator cannot manage it alone. Thus, it usually has a collective ownership or remains publically owned like the Internet.

    Metropolitan Area Network

The Metropolitan area network is larger than a LAN. But, it is smaller than WAN. However, it has certain features of both LAN and WAN. It covers a town or a city and can be owned by a single person or a company. For example, a cable television network that provides Internet connection in a particular city.

    Virtual Private Networks

VPN offers links or connections to noes that are connected through the virtual circuits. It does not use cables or wires to connect devices; instead, it uses a virtual private network. The topology of a VPN is more complex than the point-to-point network.

These are some of the common types of computer network used around the world.

Do I Need A Dedicated IP Address

A dedicated IP address is exclusively assigned to your domain name.

But, do you really need a dedicated IP address?

    Let’s have a look.

Is a Dedicated IP Address Required?

There are many reasons that fall in the favor of getting a dedicated IP address for your domain name.

    This includes:

    • Getting higher stability as only you will be using it. So, the likelihood of your IP address getting flagged by a malicious website or getting blacklisted due to a spamming activity of any other user on the shared server. Your website won’t be affected by the activity of other users on the shared server if you opt for a dedicated IP address.
    • Those with high-volume traffic will find having a dedicated IP address prevents their website from crashing. The speed and performance of a high-volume traffic website remain optimum on a dedicated IP address.

    What is Email Encryption

As the technology to communication continues to advance, people are getting more and more hyped up about security.

They seek securing their accounts with complicated, hard-to-crack passwords as well as find a better antivirus software to protect their devices. Every security company or antivirus software vendor will introduce you to a new threat that may hinder your online presence and make your data vulnerable to hacking. With more and more communication carried out over the email, one is fearful of their sensitive information being picked up by people with malicious intent.

This is where email encryption comes in by protecting information you send from eavesdroppers. When you send an email normally, it is just like writing a postcard. Anyone who picks up you card on the way can read it. Whereas, an encrypted email is just like a letter in a sealed envelope only the receiver can open.

So what is Email encryption? Let’s find out more.

What Does One Mean by Email Encryption?

Email encryption is protecting email messages using encryption so that the intended party or parties can only read the information send. No other entity can access the information sent. One can even add a feature of authentication within email encryption.

A normally mailed email is vulnerable to be intercepted and can lead to disclosure of information. There are certain tools that helps hackers read these mails and collect sensitive information. Many companies sharing sensitive data over email or journalists, etc. use email encryption to protect their emails.

    How Does Email Encryption Work?

Encryption of an email means the information is scrambled and only a cryptographic key can help unencrypt it. One should encrypt three things:
    • The connection from the email provider
    • The email message
    • Stored, cached or archived email messages
There are different types of technology tools that help in encrypting emails. Some of these tools include:

Personal email certificate that helps protecting emails by digitally signing messages. This helps reduce the number of spam messages sent using your name and email account. Authentic messages will contain your digital signature, whereas bogus emails will lack this authentication.

Public Key Infrastructure or PKI is a combination of private key that is known just to you and a public key. All those you choose to distribute it or even made public know the public key. When you encrypt a mail, you will enter the public key. When the email needs to accessed by the intended recipient, he/she needs to enter the private key to decrypt the message into a readable format. Anyone can use a public key to encrypt his or her messages, but only a private key can help unencrypt the message.

Thus, not just your sensitive information such as your bank account details, login credentials, etc. need to be encrypted, but also your personal emails should be encrypted. Sending private photos, videos or sharing personal information can also be hacked and used against you. Thus, to prevent unauthorized access to an email account, email encryption is the best option.

Don’t think just getting a router will do the trick for setting up a wireless network. The first and foremost task is selecting the right router for your home. Let us start with first things first and end up helping you set up a wireless network.

    Getting a Router

The most important part of a wireless network is the router. Most routers today are home network ready. Choose routers with WPA2 encryption as it will make sure your network remains secure. Do not choose a WEP encryption router, as they are outdated.

    Switch on the Internet

Once you connect your router to a switch, it is time to unplug the modem’s Ethernet cable from the PC and connect it with the Internet port on your router. Power on the router as well as modem and wait for a couple of minutes. With the help of another Ethernet cable, connect the PC to your router’s LAN port. Switch on your PC.

Most routers today are designed to automatically assign an IP address to the computer. If you have connected all the wires properly, you will find yourself online without any hassle.

    Configure the Router

Now, once the router and computer are connected, you need to open a web browser and enter the default IP address of your router. You can check the booklet that comes with your router or look behind your router device. Most manufactures print the IP address for the router along with the login username and password on the device itself.

    Set Up a Password

Once you login into the administration page of the router, you need to change the default password of the router. Many people tend to skip this step, but it is wise to change the password. It will make access to your network more secure and keep away prying eyes from hacking into your router.
Check if your router is functioning on the latest firmware. A firmware update by the manufacture will ensure your router is up-to-date against potential issues that you may never even dream about.

    Set Wireless Name/SSID

It is important to give your network a personalized name. This personalized name is called as an SSID. Chose something with an edge that gives your network a unique identity. This is not a password; it is a name for your home wireless network. So, make it short and smart.

    Secure Your Wireless Network

A password is the most important aspect of keep your wireless network secured and away from unwanted guests. It also helps keep away hackers from evesdropping on your Internet activity. You need to select WPA or most preferably WPA2.  In some routers it is called as WAP2-AES.

Now, choose a password that is about 8 to 63 characters long. Make it complicated by mixing uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers as well as special characters. Do not use your name, your pets name or anything that is easy to guess.

Now, make sure there is no other disturbance around your router like a cordless phone, microwave oven, etc. That’s it. You are all set to use your wireless network. Your Home Group will allow your to share your data with some or all network users. Whenever new device requests to connect with your wireless network, you need to enter the password you have saved for your SSID.
