How to Connect Two Computers without a Router

Do you want to quickly connect two computers or laptops without a router?

There is a simple and inexpensive method to connect two computers without a router. Let us have a look at the easiest way to connect computers without a router.

    Connect Two Computers Directly

At times you need to share files, photos, videos, media files, documents as well as printer between two computers. This can be done easily using 1 Ethernet crossover cable and 2 network cards.

You need not worry about network cards as most of the new devices have them by default. In case you are working on ancient computers then you may need to purchase an internal LAN card and attach it to your computer’s motherboard or buy a USB Network adapter that will convert a USB port into a RJ45 (Ethernet) port.

Steps to Connect Two Computers Using Crossover Cable

    • Make sure both computers have network cards installed.
    • Using an Ethernet crossover cable, connect both computers network card.
    • Now, be sure that the network card drivers are installed in both the computers.
    • You can create a simple network by assigning IP address and subnet mask to each computer’s network card.
    • You can assign IP Address: 10.1.2.3, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. Keep the Gateway and DNS Servers blank.
    • For the second computer assign IP Address: 10.1.2.4, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. Keep the Gateway and DNS Servers blank.
    • Once you assign the IP address, ping the second computer from the first computer using command prompt.
    • Type cmd in Run window and click OK. Now, ping the IP address of the second computer that is 10.1.2.4. If you get a reply, it means your computers are now connected without a router. If you get Request timed out, it means the network card is not functioning properly.
Once your computers are connected, start sharing printers, files, photos, videos, etc. without a router.

Connecting Computers Using ad hoc Network

Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Vista users can follow the instructions below. You need to open the Control Panel and click on the Network and Sharing Centre.

Click on Setup a new connection or network link and scroll down till you find a Setup a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network option.

On the next window that opens, it will help you understand what an ad hoc wireless network is and if you are currently connected to a network. Most probably, it will be disconnected. Click on Next and type in a new network name. Choose a security type and choose a security key from no authentication, WEP or WPA2-Personal. The default WPA2-Personal is the strongest and the best security key.

Click on Next and you will see your network being setup. You can check on Save this network box, or else when you disconnect, the network will disappear forever.

That’s it. You are now ready to use your network. When you open the list of wireless networks, you will find your network name that says Waiting for users.

How to Share Data Using ad hoc Network

Once the ad hoc network is setup, you can get other computers to connect to the network. After the computers are connected, you can start sharing files, music, videos, printers, etc.

If all the computers are running on Windows 7 or higher, then you can use the home group feature. This will make it easy to share music, videos, documents, etc. In case all computers are using Windows, but different versions, then you will have to connect them using the same workgroup. Keep the network discovery, file, and printer sharing feature enabled.  In case of missed operating systems like Windows and Mac, be sure the user account in Windows has a password so that you can connect to a file share and enable the file sharing feature on the non-Windows operating systems correctly.

This is how to connect two computers without a router. Using an Ethernet crossover cable is the simplest and the easiest way to connect two computers without using a router.
