Computer Parts and Their Functions

We all know what a computer is. But do we know what are the basic computer parts and their functions?

Let us know more about some of the standard computer parts and their functions from the following article.

Different Components of the Computer and their Functions

Computers have helped humans complete their work faster, better, and with more precise results. There are several computer parts that include the ones we can see as well as the tiny microscopic ones fitted within the body.  We won’t go into the microscopic details, but let us take a quick look at the basic computer parts and their functions.

CPU – Central Processing Unit

Ad

The CPU is said to be the brain of the computer. The CPU consists of billions of tiny transistors that receive, calculate, and carries out basic processes and instructions. When the CPU is at work, it tends to generate heat. Thus, it has a fan present inside to cool it down and prevent overheating. It even powers the motherboard and other circuitry. It is placed on the motherboard. The CPU’s today are so fast that a single mouse-click will lead to processing of billions of cycles/second. Most computers have quad-core processors, in other words, four different processors in one component. You can even find six-core as well as eight-core processors in the market. However, they come with an expensive price-tag, so invest in them only if you need such superfast CPU’s.

Motherboard

Motherboard is like the heart of the computer it is the first component that is installed in a system unit. The motherboard contains all the circuitry related to the computer functions that helps keep the entire computer as one unit. It helps all components communicate with each other and even has ports that connect the eternal components connect with the internal ones. This includes the computer power plug, computer monitor plug, mouse, as well as the charger port in case of a laptop. There are many slots available in the motherboard for further extension of accessory ports. The motherboard even stores some low-level information after the system is turned off.

Memory

Next important computer part that forms the essence of a computer is the memory. The Random Access Memory (RAM), Read Only Memory (ROM) as the cache forms the computer memory. The RAM is temporary, volatile memory. It is turned out whenever the computer or a program is turned on. Once the machine is shut down the RAM disappears. Similarly for cache that is also temporary memory where stuff remains for the CPU to interpret instantly. It also disappears when the computer is shut down. The RAM on the other hand is a permanent, non-volatile memory. It begins to execute immediately when the computer is turned on. So when you hit the power button on your computer, you will immediately see the company logo on your screen. During this time the ROM kicks in and begins system check. The hard drive is where your software is placed. It is connected to the motherboard with the help of circuitry of electrical wires.

Video & Sound Card

The graphics card helps you see the images on your computer and the sound card helps you hear from the internal speaker. There are a wide variety of graphics card and sound cards that helps those into high-end graphic designing sound play for better and faster processing of their projects.

Input and Output Ports

The input and output ports help the computer send and receive information to and fro. The input devices include the keypad, touchpad, mouse, webcam, etc. The output devices include the monitors, printers, and speakers. The removable media includes the flash drives, SD cards, etc.

These are some of the computer parts and their functions. Each computer component has important part to play with even one missing can stall the computer.

What is a Floppy Disk?

Kids who use pen drives and external hard discs or even store data on the cloud will never know the essence of a floppy disk. Once computers reached homes, educational institutes and offices, floppy disk became an essential instrument to store, transfer, as well as share data.

Those PPT presentations and Word document projects or the Excel sheets containing the company’s financial data would be easily transferred to a floppy disk. Soon, floppy disk lost their fan-following once CD’s, especially re writable CD’s came into picture. Soon, CD’s phased out to an extent after pen drives came into use.

Those who have never heard of them before, let us talk about what is a floppy disk in the following article.

A Floppy Disk

A floppy disk was not a floppy instrument as the name suggests. This square shaped diskette was a storage media file that could store electronic data. It had a protective casing that kept the disk (which is actually floppy/ flexible) protected. It was coated with iron oxide and stored data magnetically.

History

Floppy disk was first created by IBM in the year 1967. It was created as an alternative to the super-expensive external hard drives. The floppy disks were initially used only for installation of a new computer program on the computer. They were about 8 inches in diameter and were read-only. This meant user could not write on these disks. The capacity of these disks was only 80KB of data.

By the year 1978, a new disk of about 5.25 inches was introduced that could hold about 360KB of data. Later a 5.25 inch floppy could store 1.2 MB dat. Then, in 1987 the 3.5 inch HD (high density) floppy disk were released that could hold 1.44MB of data were released. Soon, these 3.5 inch floppy disk became the standard instrument for distributing software as well as storing data.

How to Use Floppy Disk?

The older versions of computer did not have CD-ROM drive or a USB drive, instead there were slots to read floppy disk. Just like a CD, one had to push the floppy into the floppy drive slot in the computer’s CPU.

Is Floppy Disk In Use Today?

There are quite a few computers today that still support a floppy disk. Computers built after the year 2000 no longer came with floppy disk drive. Soon, Microsoft Windows no longer supported floppy drives.

Floppy disks were vulnerable to dust, moisture as well as heat. It was not very sturdy and could easily get damaged. Although floppy disks had many drawbacks including less storage space, they helped many users carry and store their data. Today, they are a thing of the past, but still had great use during their peak days.

Microsoft Edge Supports Passwordless Sign-ins

Microsoft Edge will now allow users to securely sign-in to their accounts without the trouble to entering the passwords. Microsoft has introduced the Web Authentication feature in the Microsoft Edge browser. Thus, users can have a better and secure way of surfing the Internet without passwords.

The Web Authentication specification will help users log on with the help of Windows Hello hardware. This means the IR cameras and the fingerprint readers along with PINs or external FIDO2 security keys will be used to authenticate users.

Users can install the Windows Insider Preview build 17723 or higher or wait till it is available for the general public in Windows 10 version 1809. As this is one of the very latest technologies, many websites still need to catch up with it. Also, it is made with backwards compatibility with external FIDO U2F security devices. Thus, it will take time for all mainstream websites to adopt.

This method is being adopted by Microsoft as today we allow many websites to store our credit card numbers, addresses, as well as other sensitive personal information for regular use. However, all this is secured only using a password that is soon becoming an outdated security model.

In order to access the web securely and safely, passwords are given a pass as they are hard to memorize and at risk to phishing and cracking.

With Windows Hello, users can authenticate any account using their biometrics such as the face and fingerprint recognition. Or they can just use a PIN to sign in.

This new technology will definitely change the way we use the Internet and make it more secure and protected from hackers and identity thieves.

How to Clean Your Android’s Data Permanently

Smartphones have become our second soul. They contain all the important names and contacts of the people we know, our memories in form of photographs and videos, music and movies for entertainment, games and utility apps to make life interesting, and much more. Our smartphones contain passwords to almost all out accounts that includes emails, social media apps, online shopping apps, and even mobile banking passwords, or credit card details. It is just like a digital form of ourselves. Thus, when we plan to give away our smartphone or sell it off, it makes us worry about unknowingly passing away our secrets to someone unknown.

Thus, we always look for ways that helps us erase data permanently from our android phone. We will help you learn how to clean your android’s data permanently without giving any one a chance to hack into your phone’s memory.

Delete Data on Android Such That It Can Never Be Recovered

Factory reset is the most common way to clean your android’s data permanently. However, factory rest does not always clean up certain information such as multimedia files, emails, etc. from the internal memory. Do not fright as there is a way that helps you do factory reset without leaving any data in the internal memory.

Encrypt Data

Encryption is the best way to ensure data on your phone remains unrecoverable. Encryption takes all the data on your phone and jumbles it into garbage. The information when read will appear as a garbled mess with no meaning at all. So even if some data remains on the phone after a factory rest, it will remain as illegible garbage.

Before you start encryption of your phone, make sure your phone is charged and a charger is nearby. You can even keep the phone plugged into a charger as this does take a really long time. This is because at times encryption may take a couple of hours as per the amount of data on your phone.

The general steps to encrypt data include:

Settings> Security> Encrypt phone.

On Samsung Galaxy phones:

Settings> Lock screen & security> Protect encrypted data.

Those using Android 6.0 Marshmallow and above, keep in mind, the data is encrypted by default. So, you just need to go ahead and carry out factory reset of the phone.

Factory Reset of Android

Before you hit the reset button, make sure all your data is properly backed up. Either transfer all your contacts, images, videos, music files, folders, etc. to your new smartphone or upload them on a cloud such as Google Drive. Now, let’s see the general steps to factory reset an Android phone.

You need to go to:

Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. Then tap Reset phone or Reset device.

Samsung Galaxy users need to:

Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset and tap Reset Device.

Once it is done, your data will be completely wiped off the phone and data that can be recovered will be encrypted into garbled mess. Thus, making it safe for you to pass on the phone or sell it to someone else.

Overwrite with Data

In case you have too many secrets and need to be absolutely sure that nothing is ever recoverable, then you need to overwrite data on your internal storage. Just fill the phone with dummy data or record a long video using your phone camera as long as the internal memory is not completely out of space. Then, go ahead and carry out another factory data reset and your phone will no longer have any traces whatsoever of your old data.

You can even go in for third party apps available on the Play Store for cleaning your android’s data permanently.

Some of the options include:
  • Secure Erase with iShredder 6
  • Undeleter
  • TunesBro Android Eraser
  • Secure Wipe
This is all about how to clean your android’s data permanently. Try these methods and safely sell your old phones without worrying about the risk of data theft.

255.255.255.0

Do the numbers 255.255.255.0 mean anything to you? Or is it just a set of complex numbers that helps define a computer network?

Let us find out more about 255.255.255.0 and its meaning in a computer network.

Subnetting and 255.255.255.0

Ad

The most common subnet mask used for connecting Internet Protocol (IPv4) network on computers. It is used mostly for home network routers.

A subnet mask helps different devices connected to a network like the router, modem, computers, etc. (local network) communicate with remote addresses.

The traditional subnets are partitioned into one of the five classes (Class A/B/C/D/E). This depends on the value of the IP address of the number. The subnet mask converts into a 32-bit binary value.

This value is as follows:

11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000

The ‘0’ in the above value mask span the IP range of the subnet.

For example, a computer’s IP address is 192.168.1.256, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. So, the computer and every other device in the same network will have the same IP address with the last three numbers that will vary. Similarly, the computer having a subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, and then all computer in the local network will be 192.168.xxx.xxx.

Use of Subnetting

Subnetting is very useful for home networks. However, it is mostly used for larger networks having more than 255 computers in the network.

Things You Need to Know Before Buying a Laptop

Thinking of buying a new laptop? Confused as there are plenty of models to choose from? Laptops today no longer need to be upgraded every couple of years, thus making it difficult to choose from the latest models when you decide to go in for a new one.

We shall discuss a few things you need to know before buying a laptop.

Quick Tips That Help You Buy a Laptop

There are plenty of choices to choose from when it comes to laptop. You can address the challenge by going through the following things you need to know before buying a laptop.

1.Size Matters

The first thing to consider is the size of your laptop. From 12.5 inches to 14 inches you need to select the size best suited as per your need. Smaller model is good for children for their school projects or if you travel a lot and need a laptop more for recreation or occasional work. Large screen sizes are perfect for professionals as well as college students. Your laptop should have a 1920 x 1080 screen. It would be even better if you go in for a 2-in-1 laptop that can be used as a laptop and a tablet. It is great for college and school students who can use the device as per their need. A touch screen laptop can be preferred if you are going in for Windows 10 OS.

2.Decide the Operating System (OS)

It is important to address this important problem as it will be the deciding factor as to your ease of use. Not all are well versed with Mac OS and if you suddenly decide to switch over, and then make sure you adapt quickly. Laptops come with 3 different OS namely, Windows, MacOS and Chrome OS.

Windows is one of the most versatile and widely used OS. It is simple to use and has many features comparable to MacOS and Chrome OS. The latest version Windows 10 has many improvements and comes with a powerful digital assistant called Cortana. Live tiles, use of stulus, touch screen compatibility, etc. are all now part of the latest Windows 10 version.

All MacBooks now come with Apple’s latest desktop OS called the macOS High Sierra. It is similar to Windows 10 in functionality but has a different interface. The virtual assistant in MacBooks is Siri. You can access your iPhone from the laptop and even unlock your laptop using Apple Watch using Siri.

Chromebooks such as Samsung Chromebook 3 are cheaper as compared to the Windows OS and MacOS. They have an interface similar to Windows and is mostly used for Chrome Browser. If you need to just check emails, chat, and spend time on social media, then Chromebooks are a good option. They are easy to carry and most preferred by parents of school children. It is hard for malware to infect and thus, useful for children. Look for Chromebooks with minimum 4GB Ram, 16 GB storage, 1920 x 1080 screen resolution (hard to find).

3.The Ergonomics Factor

Do not overlook the keyboard and touchpad feature before you buy a laptop. If you need to work a lot on your laptop then make it has a good tactile feature with a good vertical travel that is the distance travelled when the key is pressed (about 1 to 2mm). The keys should have enough space between them and should not crowd when you try and type. You should also consider a separate numerical pad on the keyboard. It will be very helpful if you use more of excel sheets. The touchpad should be able to respond immediately to your gestures and be able to pinch-and-zoom with ease.

4.Specification is the Final Game

You need to thoroughly think about the processor, hard drive, graphics chip, and RAM before you invest in a laptop. Yes, specifications may sound confusing to most but make sure you keep these points in mind.

Firstly, the CPU is what makes your laptop function. You can choose an Intel Core i5, which provides you with the best performance at the best price. Choose model numbers which end in U. Model numbers that end with Y have low power and those with HQ should be avoided. They tend to use more wattage and are found mostly in workstation or gaming systems.

Intel Core i3 are a notch below i5 performance wise. If you have budget issues, then i3 won’t disappoint you much. Intel Core i7 are a notch above i5. The models that have HQ or K in the end use higher wattage. They have four cores that allow better gaming and productivity. Those of Core i7 Y series have lower power performance. If you find a laptop with 8 in the model number, then it belongs to the latest8th Generation Core Series (Kaby Lake Refresh) available only in the U series models.

AMD processors are found in low-cost laptops and offer a good deal for your money. It is enough for those who are looking forward to surf the web, entertainment and well as productivity.
Moving over the RAM, you should go in for at least 4 GB RAM even if on a budget. And if you can loosen your purse strings a bit more then opt for 8 GB RAM.

Next thing to consider isthe battery life. Do not go in for laptops that cannot provide at least 7 hours of work whether at home or office. A laptop with 8+ hours of battery life is considered ideal. Make sure you read all the reviews related to the laptop battery life before making a decision.
Keep you budget in mind and choose your brand wisely. Brands do matter and go for companies with a good after-service support. Check out at least 4 to 5 laptops and then make the kill. And before you do that, do go through the things you need to now before buying a laptop discussed above.

Types of Cloud Storage Explained

Information can easily be passed on around the world easily in today’s digital world. This has led to accumulation of lot of information in form of files, folders, photographs, videos, software, applications, etc. Information can either be for personal or professional use. Businesses need to store the personal information of their clients and customers. Storing data becomes a problem as well as people now need to access information on the go. Thus, cloud storage comes into picture wherein you can store applications, software, as well as databases online. One can access the cloud storage from any place or anytime from the web.

There are different types of cloud storage. Let us have a look at the different cloud storage types in the following article.

Classification of Types of Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is preferred by many businesses as it helps saving cost and makes it easy to manage data and share it with authorized people.

There are three types of cloud storage:

1.Private Cloud Storage

Private clouds are specifically designed for an individual or business as per their specific needs. These private clouds can be available in two formats, on-premise and externally hosted. Externally hosted private clouds are useful for individuals and small businesses. On-premise private cloud servers are usually opted by large organizations and businesses.

The data center architecture is owned by an individual company. Thus, it provides flexibility, automation, monitoring, provisioning, and scalability. The private cloud storage services are expensive as the businesses no longer need to maintain their own data center. The data center is covered with strong security and compliance specifications, thus, storing all data under the company’s firewall.

2.Public Cloud Storage

The public cloud storage requires less administrative controls and can be accessed by anyone who is authorized to view the database. The security system is different from that on a private cloud. Thus, it is not wise to put up sensitive data on the public cloud and rigidly integrate it with your business.
Pubic cloud storage is actually the Internet. Cloud service providers (CSP)tend to use resources and applications such as Software-as-a-service (SaaS) for the general public on the cloud. This includes Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Sun Cloud, Google AppEngine, Windows Azure Services Platform, etc.

The public cloud storage service is usually pay-per-usage model and the company just needs to pay according to the storage capacity used. Public cloud storage is not the right choice for all businesses. It has limited security, configuration and SLA specificity.

3.Hybrid Cloud Storage

As the name suggests, it is a combination of private and public storage. The features can be customized as per your need and integrate it with the applications. Sensitive data can be stored on the private cloud and data that needs to be accessed with different users can be placed on the public cloud.

During peak periods, the company can transfer certain applications or part of applications to be migrated on the Public Cloud. Also, during emergencies such as natural disasters, scheduled maintenance, blackouts, Internet outage etc. data can be migrated to a public cloud for a certain period of time.

These are the 3 basic types of cloud storages available for migrating your databases and applications on the cloud. Make sure you think twice before selecting any particular type of cloud storage for your business.

Delete Deleted Files Permanently from Windows

Do you think the files you delete on your computer are lost forever? Well, the files you delete from a folder or desktop reach the recycle bin. You can even clear the recycle bin completely. However, your files are not obliterated from your system. Their path are destroyed, however, the files remain somewhere within the system, difficult to extract.

There are certain ways that make sure all the deleted files from Windows are permanently deleted. In the following article, we shall learn how to delete deleted files permanently from Windows.

Using Cipher to Delete Wiped Files from Windows

When you delete a file, it does not get wiped off completely from your hard disk. Instead the removed files are still present on your hard disk and just get overwritten by other files. In order to remove these deleted files and free up space in the hard disk, you can use the inbuilt tool by Windows, called the Cipher.

When you use Cipher it deletes files in three phases. First it fills up space with zero data then it fills it with 0xFF numbers and finally it fills it up with random numbers. As it deletes in three phases, it takes a lot of time to clear unwanted, deleted data. Thus, before you start Cipher, make sure you close all apps and give the tool plenty of time to do its work.

Remember, once you run Cipher, there will be absolutely no way to recover any of the deleted files from your computer. Thus, make sure you really want to run this utility tool.

1.Open Command Prompt in Windows Taskbar Search and right-click on it.
2.From the drop-down list select Run as Administrator.
3.Type cipher /w:C  in the command prompt and hit Enter.
4.In case you wish to permanently delete all deleted files in a particular folder, then you need to use the command cipher /w:[drive]:\folder_name.
5.If you wish to delete files only in C drive then use the command cipher /w:C, If you need to delete files in D drive then replace C with D.
6.In case you want to delete files inside a particular folder, then type the name of the folder in place of folder_name.

Cipher completes the process in three steps so make sure you have plenty of patience till the task is complete.

Use of Utility Tools

There are plenty of utility tools that help in deleting deleted files permanently from your computer. If you take a look, you will find plenty of utility apps that you can download and use to clear off unwanted deleted files from your hard disk memory.

Some of the popular freeware and security tools that completely remove data from your hard drive include:

1.Eraser
2.CCleaner
3.SDelete
4.Wondershare SafeEraser

Try these methods and delete deleted files permanently from Windows. These methods will make sure the deleted files are completely removed from your hard drive memory permanently.

Track Your Friends Using Google Latitude

Don’t you want to know where your friends are at any given moment? Do you wish to keep a track on your family members especially when you are worried about their safety? Smartphones have made it very easy to track your friends and family in times of needs and emergency. There are many apps that help you keep a tab on the location of your family members as well as friends. Not just you tracking someone, your friends and family can also track you when you are on the move. Thus, making sure all are safe and extend help in case of emergencies. Of all the many apps available, we shall learn how you could track your friends using Google Latitude.

Why Google Latitude?

Google Latitude was a web/mobile/social app developed by Google. It was a location-aware feature of Google Maps. Smartphones users could allow people they knew to view their current location via Latitude. Google Maps used their Google Account to create a map of their location.

One could choose what others could see related to their location. Some people could see their exact location and in some cases they could accept someone’s request, but hide their location from them. You could also show just which city you are in currently or hide your location from certain people. And if you wish, you could remove any person from your list.

Latitude also helped you create a blanket setting for all your contacts. You could allow Latitude to automatically detect your location or you could choose to enter it manually.

Is it Still Available?

Google has discontinued the Google Latitude app. They announced their plans to shut down Latitude on July 10, 2013. By August 9, 2013, Latitude was phased out completely.

Are There Any Other Options Available

Apart from Latitude, you could try various other apps for tracking friends and keep certain people in loop related to your own location. Some of the apps worth a mention include:

1.Life360 Family Locator
2.Glympse
3.Find My Friends
4.Google+

Try these apps as they will help you track friends better than Google Latitude.

Is It Safe to Use Credit Card at Online Gaming

Online gaming is one of the most popular ways of entertainment and hobby for online gaming enthusiasts. You will find the Internet offers some of the best slot machines to play online. There is no longer the need to find a casino made of brick and mortar, instead, sit in the comfort of your home and win great prices online in form of cash or other attractive prices. Online gaming offers the freedom to use credit cards to pay for the online casinos games. This raises the question ‘is it safe to use credit card at online gaming’.

Use of Credit Cards on the Rise

There are many websites offering online gaming and casino slot machines to play online. All you need to do is make an account on the website and enter your payment details to pay for the games. The best way to transfer money to an online gaming account is using credit cards. If you are doing business with an genuine online gaming casino, always remember, they will complete the transaction only after verification. Make sure the website has https:// as its address that points towards a secure channel.

Why Should I be Worried about Using Credit Cards for Online Gaming?

Those who pay for online gaming using credit cards should think twice before they enter their details. This is because the Internet is full of fraudsters and conmen who are ready to cheat vulnerable victims. They try to extract personal details such as credit card number, the expiry date of the credit card, mobile number as well as online transaction passwords to fleece victims of their money.

At times, certain casinos have many hidden costs that are deducted with every transaction. This means you pay out more to the online casinos than what you earn.

How Do I Make Sure It is Safe to Use Credit Cards at Online Gaming?

When carrying out online transactions on an online gaming website, you need to make sure of certain things. This will make sure it is safe to use credit cards at online gaming websites.

1.Check Out the Websites Reputation

Before you invest in any online casino, make sure you read the reviews and feedback it gets. This will help you understand if the gaming casino is a reputed business or just another online sham. Read the casino’s monetary policy carefully. This will give you an insight into the company’s policy related to safeguarding of your money.

2.Check Out the https

I am repeating this point again as it is very important to make sure your money is safe. Websites with the extra ‘s’ in the end of http indicate it is an encrypted system  and scrambles all your personal information. Thus, adding an layer of safety to the website. Keep in mind, https is not 100% safe and you need to remain vigilant.

3.Never Give Your Personal Information

It is important to note than no online casino is interested in knowing your Social Security Number, bank password, transaction password, etc. If the website starts asking you personal questions related to your credit card or bank account, leave the website immediately.

4.Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi

Never conduct online transactions using a public Wi-Fi system. There are many eavesdroppers and hackers waiting to find an opportunity to grab on to your personal information and fleece you off your money. Make sure you do this on a private network with proper anti-virus, antimalware as well as passwords in place.

5.Use a Strong Antivirus

Those who love online gaming should secure their computer using a strong antivirus and antimalware software. Do not go in for free software, instead purchase a strong antivirus software that not just protects your computer, but also your online banking transactions from hackers.
If you exert some precautions you can safely use credit cards at online gaming websites. Keep your eyes open and trust your instincts before you give out your credit card information on any online casino.

How to Register a Domain Name

A website has now become the virtual face of any business. It is the best way to reach out to people and successfully build a steady stream of new customers. Thus, it is very important to choose a wise domain name for your website and even more importantly registering a domain name.

Let us learn how to register a domain name and complete the inherent process today for running a successful online and offline business.

Registering a Domain Name

In this article, we shall talk mainly about how to register a domain name. Once it is decided to create a website for your business, the first thing to do is register a domain name. Now, a domain name can be same as your business name or it can be something different. This domain name will be how your website will be known to your customers. For example, ‘www.yourwebsitename.com’. The next step is to find out if the domain name is available or already in use by somebody else. It is very easy to find this out, or else you can go in for a paid domain name. Let us go into the details of registering a domain name.

Choose a Domain Name

Domain name will become the face of your business. The minute someone say Amazon, you imagine an online store where you can purchase anything and everything possible. eBay brings to your mind a profitable deal on New, Used, or Refurbished goods. Similarly, you need to choose a domain name that represents your business, service, store, or website in a clear way.

A domain name can be bought from a domain name registrar. This is easier as you can find the domain names that are available. You could either try GoDadddy or Namecheap or Google Domains to purchase a domain name. Make sure you name is catchy and gets easily noticed by potential visitors. You could try carrying out some SEO as well to find a good name for your website.

Choose a Suffix Appropriately

It is not necessary that you go in for just ‘.com’ suffix. If you are an educational institute you could try using ‘.edu’ suffic or go in for a country specific suffix such as ‘.in’ or ‘.uk’. Other available top-level domain (TDL) includes .game, .net, .org, .hiphop, etc.

Choose a Registrar

Once you have your website domain name in place and have chosen the appropriate TDL, it is time to choose a registrar to host your domain. You could choose GoDaddy.com or any similar registrar and type in your chosen domain name. Certain registrars offer you free domain names for a year or so and then charge you heavily on it. A few such as Cloudways require you to purchase a domain name elsewhere and then they register it.

Many registrars offer you different registration duration plans. This includes an annual plan, three years, five years, or even for ten years. Make sure you choose wisely especially if you are going in for plans for more than a year. Read the offer policies carefully. Find out their policy related to transferring your domain name to another registrar, in case you don’t like the current service. Read about their policies in case the company goes out of business, leaving your domain name without a host.

Read the Contract

People often think once they pay for a domain name, it becomes theirs forever. However, this may not be case always as the registrars have clauses in their contract that can affect your domain name in many ways.

Some registrars have the right to revoke your domain name in case it breaks or flaunts certain company rules. This includes use of domain name for illegal purposes, spamming or other unacceptable purposes.

In some cases, the registrar has the right to delete your domain name at their discretion, without any specific reason. In such cases, the domain name belongs to the registrar and not to your business.
Also, almost all registrars have included the clause that gives them the right to make changes in the registration agreement as when they deem fit. Thus, read every line carefully before you sign any contract related to domain name.

Wait for Things to Take Shape

Once the domain name is registered and paid for, you may have to wait for several hours or days before your site is up and running. This is because of the backend process that occurs without your involvement. Once you site is up and in case you are unhappy with the registration service or find a better deal, you can transfer your domain name to another registration service.

Most of the domains hosting services offer transfer of domain name for free. However, in case you need to pay for it, make sure you do not pay more than what you paid for a new domain name.

This is how to register a domain name to get your website up and running. Go through all the available options before you choose the best domain hosting service according to your needs and budget.
