Using an Old Router as a Repeater

Owners of a large house often complain of Wi-Fi blackspot around the house. To improve wireless signal one can setup a spare or an old router to function as a repeater.

The following steps will help you expand your wireless network using another router.

Get Your Gear Ready

You need to get all the equipment ready to help you expand your wireless network. You will need two routers, the one you already use, call it ‘Router A’ and the spare or old router that will help you expand your wireless signal, call it ‘Router B’. In order to configure the routers, you need a PC or a laptop along with an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi.

Make sure you note down the individual SSID and passwords for each router before you begin connecting each router to Wi-Fi.

Configuring Router A

Before you begin, make sure you unplug each router from the power socket. Now, take an Ethernet cable from the WAN port of Router A and connect it to the WAN/Internet port of your modem. If your Router A functions as a modem, skip this step.

You can connect your computer’s Ethernet port to the Router A’s LAN port using an Ethernet cable. You can even connect your computer to the router wirelessly.

Power on the modem and router and allow them to power up. Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your router in the address bar. The default IP address is usually or You can check your router device for the default IP address printed on it.

Enter the default admin username and password for the router. You can find the default login information printed on your router device itself. Once you login, search for DHCP settings and make sure it is enabled on Router A.

Check if the Internet connection is active on your computer. If yes, remove the Ethernet cable connecting Router A and the computer.

Configuring Router B

Plug in your Router B and turn the power on. Now, we need to configure Router B on the same subnet as Router A in order to allow the devices to access each other.

Connect the Ethernet cable from LAN port on Router B with the computer. Enter the default IP address in the web browser address bar for the Router B. Type your login details and search for the DHCP settings on the admin page. You need to disable DHCP server on the Router B.

Now, if the Router A and B have the same default IP address, then you need to change it. Go to ‘LAN’ or ‘Local Network’ page on router admin website. You will find the current IP address that needs to be deleted. Type in a new IP address that should be same as Router A on the first three set of numbers of the four. For example, if IP address for Router A is then it should be for Router B.

You should also configure Router B Wi-Fi name and passkey similar to Router A.

Get Things Online

Power off Router B and connect an Ethernet cable from LAN port on Router A to the first LAN port on Router B. Power on Router B and if it has the IP address you entered, it will also be online just as Router A. Restart the computer connected to router 2 and connect other computers and devices wirelessly to the wireless network.

This is how you expand your wireless network using another router. Now, keep in mind, both the routers belong to the same home network. Thus, you will be able to share your folders, music libraries, photos, etc. from all computers and other devices that are connected via the same network.
